Hokkaido was my second trip with PowderQuest, and first time to Japan. Nothing could have prepared me for this epic adventure! Mo, our lead guide, consistently found the secret stashes around Hokkaido. Matching our ski abilities to terrain meant I always felt challenged and safe while discovering a whole new level of skiing! Japow!! A Powderquest trip also includes tours of local restaurants to taste and explore local delicacies. Powderquest thinks of every detail!
The trip was so incredible, I soon booked another one! (Their trips are so epic, one is never enough).
Bonus of a Powderquest trip - you make some life long friends!

Wow, I loved loved loved this trip!!! The skiing was so great-- as per usual, the Powderquest crew busted their butts to find us the best snow every single day. We were based in Furano, which put us about an hour from a bunch of other resorts, so each morning they made an educated decision on whether to stay at Furano or take a day trip. Every day and every decision was totally awesome and worth it. We got to see several different areas and ski blower pow every day. It was so perfect. Also, the food was INCREDIBLE and all of the hotels/accommodations were awesome. Traveling with Powderquest is such a treat because they really take their roles as guides seriously-- they take me to the best runs, the best snow, the best food, and the best hotels, and I don't have to make any decisions or do any research-- I can just relax and enjoy myself. I love traveling with them and cannot recommend this trip enough! Go have fun in JAPAN!!!

This was my second trip with PowderQuest and I have already booked a third.. Going in to the first I was thinking it would be a once in a lifetime event but PowderQuest was honestly so amazing that I’ve changed my philosophy!

The guides went above and beyond to make sure we had fresh lines, that we were safe, and that we had fun. They were professional but also a pleasure to hang out with after the turns were done.

Skiing was epically Japan. Amazing terrain, gorgeous views, super light powder in abundance. The skinning was well worth it but I’ll give a lot of credit to our guide who made sure our track was clear and manageable.

I highly recommend this trip and have developed a lot of trust in PowderQuest's ability to choose epic locations and guides!

We have skied in South America with PowderQuest for many years, so when they began offering tours in Japan doing a Hokkaido trip with them was a quick & excellent decision. We were based at a darling hotel in Furano, with an equally darling as well as entertaining proprietor. PowderQuest's owner & founder, David Owen was our guide, along with a local guide who knew the area well. Our little band of snow seekers ventured out every day to find the best & most beautiful. We ski toured in Daisetsuzan National Park, boot packed through forests, shredded bamboo, and made turns along mountain streams. In a word... a dream. Hokkaido's cuisine is amazing. Our group was fantastic. Anywhere in the world PowderQuest decides to go next, we will surely follow. And, we will be back with them in Japan very soon.

I went on the PowderQuest trip to Hokkaido in January of 2018 and it was the best ski trip of my life. The guide was a true professional and made certain that the group was both safe and having fun. The accommodations were very nice and conveniently located. The other skiers and boarders on the trip were great athletes and have become even better friends. This was my second trip with PowderQuest and I expect to do many more in my future. Highly recommend!

In two years I have done 3 trips through Powder Quest. The reason I keep going back to them is that I find their guides to be the most knowledgeable and personable of any other tour company I have used. They are absolutely dedicated to delivering to the client what they want from each tour. I love learning new skills and my guide Maxi taught be how to cut a proper skin track, use maps, assess snow conditions and avalanche risk, etc. Our tail guide Keala taught us about Japanese culture and took us to the best restaurants. I skied deep snow, learned new skills, ate amazing food, and got incredible action shots that made my friends jealous. I cannot recommend Powder Quest enough. I’ll be a lifelong customer.

After Having been captivated by images of Japanese powder for years, skiing Hokkaido with Powder Quest was a dream come true. The powder skiing in Hokkaido really is as good as you’ve heard, but without guides that can get you to the goods, you could ski nothing but tracked out crud, stand in lift lines and stumble your way through or completely miss fantastic food for your trip of a lifetime. Our guides knew where to go to get away from the crowds, we skied deep, light untracked snow 5 out of 7 days. The first 2 days were following an extended stormless period, then it started snowing and never stopped. As a cultural experience PowderQuest provided a Japanese guide who’s insights gave our group a behind the scenes view of local customs, cuisine and history which was an unexpected pleasure. The Furano area is filled with packs of dudes, all strong skiers, guided by mostly non-Japanese and all hunting for pow. Our group skied better snow day after day, ate better food with special attention because of our Japanese speaking guide and skied mostly by ourselves enjoying the spiritual silence of the forest. This is my third trip with PowderQuest (Chile 1st, Argentina 2nd) and I have 100% percent confidence that when I buck up for a bucket list trip that I will get what I want and be guided by total pros.

This was my third year to explore Hokkaido and Hakuba with Powderquest. I've skied all of South America with and without them for a decade so this decision was a no brainer. I've also ski toured
Antarctica, the US, my Montana backyard, Canada, Africa, Europe, and Australia. I know quality both in destinations and tour operators. You can't go wrong here. Management is responsive and flexible. On the ground, Mo has been my lead guide for years. His awareness of changing weather conditions, avalanche considerations and juggling group ability and expectations made for a perfect experience. Camille our secondary guide is equally astute and given his Swiss precision and profound command of
Japanese made the trips perfect. 2020 was a low snow year yet this was one of my best trips.

I went on this tour (Snowboarder) in early Aug 2019. Snowfall was weak at Valle Nevada and El Colorado that year and concerning to say the least!

Powderquest is run by seasoned professionals - they made the hard call to force a change in our tour and we went to Nevadas de Chillán after two days of getting our legs warmed up. This decision saved the trip! Chillán received some fresh snowfall and our guides found us untouched snow and fun lines every day.

I found the accommodations a lot of fun, but also relaxing. The team at Farallones made great food, entertained and were amazing hosts. Chillán was great as well.

Special shout out! - Christian was the snowboarder in our guide team. I didn't appreciate the value of having an experienced instructor on the tour until he changed how I ride. I built a lot of bad habits through a handful of years with minimal riding. Christian explained the proper techniques in simple terms and worked with us throughout the trip whenever we wanted, to work out the kinks. Thank you, Chris!

          Thanks Powderquest for the memories!

From the time we arrived, to the time we left we had fun. Our guides (Maxi and Christian) were serious and focused, but fun and entertaining and we have become lifelong friends. The culture was friendly and warm and left us wanting to return. The skiing and the views, were breathtaking. This, THIS was something I'll never forget. Thank you PowderQuest!

not many better ways to take a break from the late summer heat than to ski in S. America. Maxi and Christian put us on the snow and our group had a great time skiing, drinking wine and seeing S. America. I would definitely sign up for a return engagement.

Been on two PowderQuest tours - both were absolutely fantastic. In 2001 I went with my wife and some friends and in 2012 (now looking at additional dates) with some of the college crew.the levels of professionalism was off the charts. David and the team took out abilities into account in each days adventures and found us the goods. Loved the fusion of culture into our trips, like when we visited a Mapuche Indian farm where we enjoyed native meats smoked in a thatched hut or hit the thermal streams. Even when the weather didn’t cooperate, the PQ team found alternative activities to keep things going. They introduced me to splitboarding! The people that these trips attract are always the type the I’d like to hang with...I’ve met super interesting folks in both of my experiences and am now super pumped to book my next trip.

          Hiking Las Lenas
Dropping in La Parva false summit
          El Colorado Santa Terra lines
Way back in the late 90's some professional snowboard friends of mine took a trip to Las Lenas and returned with some photos of riding Cerro Torrecillas. From that day forward it was a life quest to ride the spines of Cerro Torrecillas. I decade later I finally had that life quest realized on the Frontier Las Les trip with Powder quest and then some. The trip was mind blowingly awesome, from the food, the terrain, lodging, to the most amazing guides I've ever met.

I entered the trip with the primary quest of shredding Cerro Torrecillas but wanted to get my fill of South American shredding so I wanted to hit the longest tour Powderquest offered as I didn't know if I'd ever get the chance again. On setting up the tour, I shared the photo of Cerro Torrecillas with the guides and they told me they knew right where it was and said we could probably make it happen.

From day one I was stoked on our guides, lodging, and food. We kicked off with a warm up at Portillo, one of the most beautiful ski resorts I've ever visited. I instantly bonded with one of the guides and he skill set me accordingly, leading me to difficult lines, drops, and hits. From there the trip just got better and better, everyday with more awesome than the last. The trip kicked off right at the end of a snow cycle and I was amazed how our guides kept finding pow stashes. The stop off at Ski Arpa was outstanding to say the least. I come from the Pacific Northwest where our average vertical is usually 1000ft. At Arpa we were easily throwing down 3000ft vertical runs. Big wide open turns as fast as you could go. Lodging was this cool little Chilean resort with just the Powderquest crew. One particular day at El Colorado it was pretty crusty in bounds. The guides went out on a scouting mission, came back shortly, and we ducked into some huge vert with big open pow fields. The whole day was filled with pow turns shuttling to a van out of bounds. I was so stoked on their ability to show us the goods.

When we finally made it to Las Lenas the anticipation was high, I was really hoping we'd hit Torrecillas. Timing was of the essence and the clouds parted as we made the hike to Cerro Torrecillas. I railed fresh tracks down with the biggest smile on my face. As the storm cycle stirred up later in the week, the mountain shut down the Marte lift. The guides pulled some strings and managed to get us a snow cat so we could still nab some turns. Again the guides delivered on the goods when the rest of the mountains was shut down. So awesome. In the end this was the most epic shred vacation I've ever been on, and I've been snowboarding for over 30 years now. Ever since I've been planning my return saving my pennies for more refills. Thanks Powderquest for the trip of a lifetime!

          Great Guides

When you put money down to travel halfway to the other end of the globe, you really want to have a satisfying experience. If you have the trip of a lifetime, well that's even better. The guides at PowderQuest (Mo and Vicho on this trip) knew the terrain like the back of their hand. On a day when it looked like there was no fresh to be found, they came through and found steep, challenging, and powder packed runs. I almost felt sorry for the other people at the resort riding down the wind scoured slopes in the fog. I said almost. The terrain in Argentina is unlike anywhere else in the world, and it is so expansive that it can be really intimidating, which is why I'm so thankful for the expert guides. They made everything easy and kept us in the loop regarding plans for each day, as weather in the Andes can be unpredictable. The highlight of the trip, however, had to be the two days riding at Baguales. The lodge is quaint and homey, and having private access in this area is nothing short of amazing. The trip to the lodge is an adventure in itself, driving through rivers before transitioning to the snowcat to take you the rest of the way to the lodge. We had great food, great wine, great hosts and accommodations, and absolutely stellar guides. All in all, there is nothing I can complain about with regards to this trip. My party arrived several days early to spend more time doing touristy things (read: eating meat and drinking), which I definitely recommend as Argentina is an incredible place.

PowderQuest is the best! The Argentina Snow Adventure has awesome terrain, world-class guides, fabulous food and great fun. Cat skiing at Baguales is a highlight and is not to be missed. Scenery on this trip is excellent, and the towns visited offer a great Argentinian cultural experience. I have been on multiple trips with PowderQuest and highly recommend their services!

South American Honeymoon in the Andes

          Kyle Ragan
          23/06/2015
My wife and I knew that we wanted to do something "different" for our honeymoon in 2014. We are both big skiers and love adventure. The only problem is that we were getting married in June and did not want to wait 6+ months for a chance to go skiing on our honeymoon.

I did some research and found a few different tours that offered something close to what we were looking for in South America. The first thing that I really appreciated is that PowderQuest was incredibly responsive to all of our inquiries. I initially worked with Suzi via both email and phone. She was so helpful in creating a custom package for us and relieved so much stress that we had in planning such an important trip. We ended up selecting the Summer Snow Escape Off Piste trip plus added some custom options. Suzi worked with us to add on a day of wine tasting/touring at 3-different vineyards in Chile and an additional 3-days of skiing at Nevados de Chillan. She handled all of the additional accommodations within Chile including the wine tour, ground transportation, and round-trip airfare.

Let me say that the trip itself was nothing short of amazing. Some people may think it was an odd choice to spend our honeymoon with a group of strangers riding in a van through the Chilean Andes, but I did propose to my wife during a 3-day camping trip to the Australian Outback, so this was right on par for us. Right from the point of meeting our guides, Philippe and David, at the airport they did a great job of bringing the group together ... and what a group it was. The group was a mix of young and old, skiers and snowboarders, but it did not matter one bit. The guides did such a good job of bring us all together right from the first stop we made to grab some empanadas and water before making the climb up into the Andes from Santiago.

The first stop we made was at the Powder Lodge where we would spend 4-nights. The staff here, including the owner, were so accommodating and friendly right from the first minute that we arrived to the last that we departed. Each day after skiing we would come back to some sort of apres-ski appetizer and drinks before taking a dip in the wood-fired hot tub. Each night the live-in staff would prepare a fabulous, delicious dinner in the open kitchen. Everything here was served "family style" at a large shared tabled and provided for a great opportunity to talk about the days activities while enjoying great food and drink.

The skiing during this part of the trip was a little rough due to the lack of recent snow. But, as we all know, with this sport we are at the mercy of mother nature. We did have blue bird days each day here and the guides did their best to find us the best snow on the mountain each day which is all that we could ask for. Our guides did a really good job of leading us on all of our off piste hikes and pushed each individual just enough to experience new things. The guides did not just lead us each day, but spent time in teaching and reviewing skiing techniques for the various conditions which I thought was above and beyond what the trip called for. I can honestly say that due to that experience, I am a much better and more confident skier in varied terrain.

After packing up and saying our good-byes to the staff at Powder Lodge we made our way back down through Santiago and towards Portillo where we stayed at a beautiful hacienda in San Esteban. The accommodations here were just as spectacular as the Powder Lodge, but with a different feel. The property itself was set on a large vineyard with spectacular views of the Andes. Our rooms were much more secluded, which was perfect from my newlywed wife and myself, but there was still a large area where we could all convene for meals each night and discuss the days activities.

Skiing Portillo was a great experience. With the knowledge that we had acquired in the days earlier, we were definitely ready to experience all that it had to offer ... even including the Roca Jack! Personally, I pushed myself the farthest here at Portillo. Up the Roca Jack I traversed and hiked over to one of their famous couloirs with our guide Philippe. Now, I did not go as far as the Super C, but instead we went for the S Couloir. I have never skied a couloir before and I did not want to leave Chile without experiencing it. On our last run at Portillo we got to experience the "Lake Run." The most difficult part of this run is paying attention and not being distracted by the scenery. It was definitely worth the hike out and the end to a great few days at Portillo.

After leaving Portillo we packed the van and headed back down to Santiago. We unloaded into our hotel before reconvening in the lobby and heading out for a night on the town with Philippe and David. They took us to an incredible Sushi Japanese/fusion restaurant where we had the freshest sushi we have ever had. My wife and I are huge sushi fans, typically eating it at least once a week. Since returning from this trip a year ago, we have only had it maybe half a dozen times because we know nothing will compare. We spent the rest of the night at a local bar with the group and laughed the night away as we drank and carried on. We finally returned to the hotel and said our good-byes as different members of the groups departed and different times the following morning.

Our trip continued in the morning and over the next week including the wine tour and more skiing at Nevados de Chillan. Since that was custom and on our own (unguided) I will not go into that other than to say that everything worked out just as Suzi had set up for us. I can say that if ever provided the chance, I would undoubtedly book with PowderQuest again. I hope that the opportunity presents itself to once again travel south and experience another unforgettable trip. My wife and I often reminisce about this trip and it's about so much more than just the skiing.

Of the six or seven Powderquest tours I have been on, this was my all time favorite. Two whole weeks of fun traveling and skiing with a group that you really get to know well. Terrific guides that make it a unique experience and find you the best snow to ski/board on safely!

Visit Santiago, Valle Nevado area and experience the famous Powder Lodge that everyone loves to stay at. Fly to Mendoza and load up the minivan with all your gear again and go to an unbelievable winery and dining experience on the way to Las Lenas. Las Lenas is the most amazing ski camp you will ever experience. The hiking and slopes are ENDLESS and the "base camp" is a crazy place full of nothing but die hard skiers/boarders/guides and a party town too. Very international, ski fanatics from all over the world flock there every summer!

Would I do it again? ABSOLUTELY

The Andes are amazing, the PowderQuest people are incredible, and the skiing experience in Chile & Argentina is like no other. This vacation was awesome! Just the right amount of backcountry mixed with inbounds skiing for skiers who don't have a lot of backcountry experience. The best thing about the trip was our guides, they were the best! Being able to ski so many resorts in such a short time was a real benefit also. Truly a wonderful, unforgettable vacation!

          A Huge Leap Forward

          Anne Holzman
          20/03/2012
The trip definitely gave me more confidence in my riding. I was pushed (in a supportive, encouraging way) to do things that I would never have done on my own. Some things I did successfully, others not. But, having those memories will help me push harder to improve this coming winter. I also learned a lot about the more technical parts of the sport.

Most of my friends are skiers, so we don't tend to discuss board mechanics, which means I've been riding ignorant for many years. Odd as it may sound, it was enlightening to discuss binding position and the purpose of a highback.

I feel more comfortable calling myself a boarder now, as opposed to just someone who snowboards.
