Powder Road Trip

This fully guided Hokkaido Powder Road Trip with Journey Into Japan takes you to central Hokkaido's premier resorts and/or backcountry. On these tours you will ski Furano, Kamui, Tomamu, and Asahidake, with options to ski Tokachi (backcountry) and Kurodake and other local gems with secret powder stashes.

This tour is about finding powder snow. Accordingly, the guides will look to take you off piste when that is the best option. For example, after a resort introduction with your guide, you can choose between continuing to ski the lifts, or you can join your guide and explore the superb nearby backcountry.

Transport throughout is via private 4WD mini bus providing complete autonomy and the freedom to vary the daily skiing schedule depending on weather and snow conditions, providing the opportunity to pick the best location on any given day. A true road trip!

This tour ideally is suited to skiers & snow boarders of intermediate or above standard, particularly for those wishing to join the guide in the off piste areas. However, if someone in your group just wants to enjoy the perfect corduroy on the resort, then you will enjoy this tour no matter what your skiing or snowboarding skill.

All areas visited on this tour have access to true backcountry. For those wanting to enjoy some of the more exotic off piste runs, where access back to the lifts requires some climbing, you will need climbing skins and climbing style telemark or alpine touring bindings (available for rent through JIJ).

Itinerary

Day 1
Mid to late afternoon make your way from Asahikawa Station to your nearby hotel (about 1 block). Arrive late afternoon and check into hotel. Evening meet guide and introductory Japanese meal.

Day 2-3
Your guide will decide which areas you will ski based on the best snow conditions on the day. This will be either Kamui, Asahi Dake, Kuro Dake, or other nearby small areas that may have a secret stash of powder either on or off piste.

Day 4
Early morning departure from your Asahikawa accommodation. Depending on snow conditions, today you will ski either Kamui, Asahi Dake or Furano, depending on snow conditions. After skiing transfer to your Furano accommodation.

Day 5-7
Dependent on snow conditions, you will ski at either Furano, Asahi Dake, Tomamu, Tokachi backcountry or other nearby small areas that may have a secret stash of powder either on or off piste. 

Day 8
Depart for Chitose or Asahikawa Airports by bus. Arrive Asahikawa Airport approximately mid morning or Chitose Airport early afternoon.

Tip # 1: JIJ recommend modern Alpine Touring (AT) gear for this tour. This way you can use the same kit for either on or off piste skiing, and if you are new to AT skis and bindings, you have the bonus of learning how to use AT skis and associated equipment (skins, beacon, etc).

Tip # 2: Book flights that will arrive in Chitose or Asahikawa airport by about midday on day one of your tour. For your departure day, don't book a departure flight any earlier than about 1:00 pm.

Lodging

JIJ use mixed Japanese western style accommodations so you can be assured of the chance to experience authentic local food and hospitality. The Powder Road Trip stays in two locations, Asahikawa and Furano.

Asahikawa
Hotel Paco is most commonly used in Asahikawa (or JR Inn if not available). The hotel is a 3-star property located right in town. Rooms are western with a private en-suite and the property has a Japanese bath house on-site. There is also a restaurant, bar and free wifi available.
Furano
Pension Furanui is located in the heart of Furano village among restaurants and bars. Rooms are basic Japanese-style and all have a private toilet & basin. There is an indoor Japanese bath house on-site which is a nice way to start and end the day. The property also has a common lounge area.

Journey Into Japan (JIJ) Terms & Conditions

DEPOSIT & FULL PAYMENT

  • Deposit is $AUD250 per person.
  • All deposits are non-refundable.
  • Final balance due: 60 days prior to departure.
  • All payments are in Australian Dollars (AUD)

CANCELLATION BY YOU

  • more than 60 days prior to departure, full deposit forfeited.
  • 60 to 30 days prior to departure, 50% of trip cost is forfeited.
  • Less than 30 days 100% forfeited.
  • JIJ insist you take out travel insurance at time of sending your deposit.

CANCELLATION BY JIJ
JIJ reserve the right to cancel any tour prior to departure. In this case you will receive a full refund. You will not be entitled to make any further claim for compensation, damages, expenses, loss of time or inconvenience.

GROUP SIZE 
Trips costs are based on optimum group sizes. If we don’t get the required number of people (4 for all trips), you will be notified as soon as possible and offered the choice of: 

a) A full refund of the money you have paid.
b) A transfer to another date at no cost to you.
c) Paying a surcharge.

ROUTE & ITINERARY CHANGES 
Due to various factors, such as weather, group ability, gov’t legislation affecting routes and other unforeseen circumstances we reserve the right to alter itineraries if necessary. In most cases itinerary alterations will be advised prior to depature.
