Shiga Kogen Powder Tour Packages

Shiga Kogen is Japan's largest ski resort with 18 mostly inter-connected ski areas all on the one lift pass.

It can take several days to ski all of the areas in Shiga Kogen let alone knowing where to find the secret powder stashes.

Your guides grew up in Shiga kogen and know all the secret stashes so you can be assured you won't miss anything on one of these guided tours.

This tour is ideally suited to intermediate to advanced skiers & snowboarders who want to explore not just the piste but also the fabulous off-piste and side-country that the Shiga Kogen ski areas have to offer.

All access is via lifts so hiking (apart from the odd side-step) shouldn't be required.

The package is only available to private groups so 2 would be about the minimum group size to make it financially viable with a maximum of up to 6 in the group.

This could be an ideal trip for a group of friends or a family wanting to make their next ski resort holiday a more adventurous one.

In addition to the great skiing & riding to be had, this area is rich in culture so you can expect to soak in local Hot Springs and visit the famous Snow Monkey Park, taste locally brewed sake, visit historic temples.

Base Camp

Your base camp for this tour is at Lodge Aibiya in Yudanakah (commonly know as the Snow Monkey town) which is located just 14km from Shiga Kogen's slopes.

Yudanakah offers far more of a Japanese experience as it is a real hot springs town and not a resort.

Your Guides & Hosts

Yoshi & Seongmi (who both speak fluent English) are the owners and operators of Lodge Aibiya and have been hosting domestic and foreign visitors for several years.

The lodge is simple yet very comfortable and has a real Japanese vibe to it.

Yoshi has been skiing at Shiga Kogen since he was a little tacker and over that time has gotten to know every inch of the mountain.

In addition to Yoshi lead-guiding, there will also be a tail guide rounding up the group from behind.

This tour will incorporates fabulous adventure skiing & riding with a brilliant cultural experience.

Itinerary

Typical itinerary

This is a powder tour so wider skis or powder board are recommended to get the best out of this tour. Avalanche safety gear (backpack, beacon, shovel & probe) are included in the price.

Arrival Day

Arrive at Yudanaka Station and walk up to the lodge (about 6 minutes). When you arrive at Aibiya, you will have short orientation with Yoshi (Host/ Guide) for the tour. Once settled you can explore the town of Yudanaka by foot.

Ski Days (Powder Day)

After a hearty self-prepared breakfast at Lodge Aibiya, your group will be driven in a private van to one of the ski area in shiga kogen to launch from for the day. This may vary from day-to-day depending on weather.

Generally, the tour finishes around 3pm. If the snow condition is good, it will be extended by an extra hour. Throughout the day your guides will show you around the ski areas and take you into the hidden powder stashes and take photographs of you.

At lunchtime you will stop out one of the many daytime restaurants scattered throughout Shiga Kogen...and then it's back out to hit the slopes & POW in the afternoon.

Shigakogen is the largest ski resort in Japan so we recommend minimum 3 days to explore the resort. If you would like to experience all of the local stashes, 5 days tour will be more ideal.

In the late afternoon or evening you may wish to hit up 3 exquisite hot spring baths that AIBIYA offers at a special price. After an onsen, have a few après drinks at one of the local bars in Yudanaka.

The evenings are yours to do what you like. There are many good restaurants and bars near by for a little night out. You can walk up to Shibu onsen which is 20 minutes away from the lodge.


Ski days( Not Powder day)

With a local guide, there is no need to worry if it’s not a powder day. You will be skiing 15 ski areas on a day that the local calls “Shigakogen side to side tour”!

Cultural day( Not ski day)

If the snow conditions are very poor, there will be an opportunity for you to submerse yourself in the Japanese culture. See Japanese monkeys soaking in the hot spring bath, stroll around an old historic town, taste freshly made top quality sake, visit Hokusai art museum and Zenkoji temple in Nagano city....there are lots of cultural activities you can enjoy.

Departure Day

After breakfast it is time to say goodbye. If time permits, make sure you visit the Sake factory and Shibu Onsen as well as the monkey park (which takes about 3 hours all up).

Lodge Aibya

Lodge Aibiya is located in Yudanaka township and the perfect place to relax after a day on the slopes. Yoshi and Seongmi provide a high level of Japanese service backed up with western insights gained by working overseas. English speaking with a wealth of knowledge of the Nagano area, Yoshi and Seongmi will look after all your needs.

The Lodge has an option of quad share single western bed rooms for group bookings and twin share rooms with shared bathroom. They have a twin room with double bed which is ideal for couples or for those that want to upgrade to the single supplement and there is the option to upgrade to the deluxe rooms with private bathrooms which can sleep up to four people.

There is a well equipped kitchen & dining space for those who would like to cook themselves (supermarket shuttle available once every 2 days) or you can enjoy the many traditional Japanese restaurants only a short walk away. The lounge room at Aibiya has books, board games and is available 24 hours a day. 

There are separate male & female shared shower facilities.

A free continental breakfast is provided each day with breads, cereal, fruits, yoghurt, coffee, tea and fruit juices.

Free WI-FI is available throughout the lodge. A gift shop with crafts made locally and beverages, local Shiga Kogen beer and snacks are available for sale.  

The lodge is only a 6 minute walk from the train station and local convenience stores are nearby.

  • All deposits are non-refundable.
  • Final balance due: 30 days prior to departure.
  • All payments are in Japanese Yen (JPY) 

CANCELLATION BY YOU

  • more than 30 days prior to departure, full deposit forfeited.
  • Less than 30 days 100% forfeited.
  • Tour operator highly recommends you take out travel insurance at time of sending your deposit.

Aibiya Guides reserves the right to cancel any tour prior to departure. In this case you will receive a full refund. You will not be entitled to make any further claim for compensation, damages, expenses, loss of time or inconvenience.
